Hearing Dogs for Deaf People
Hearing dogs for deaf people is a charity which trains clever dogs to alert deaf people to important and life saving sounds.
JSR are proud to support Hearing Dogs For Deaf People and specifically their work for people in East Yorkshire.
JSR's Bev Gibson went to see the team at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People to learn about what they do and how they do it.
It was a fascinating day where she watched how the dogs are trained. It takes around 18-24 months to train a puppy to become a fully accredited hearing dog. One of the trainers, Jess, taught a dog how to alert her to sounds by touching a designated spot on her leg with its nose when there is a noise such as an alarm or doorbell. Being aware of important noises makes a real difference to deaf people's lives, and can even save them.
Deafness can be a very isolating disability. A hearing dog provides lots of love, companionship and emotional support. This is really important as many deaf people can feel very lonely and isolated. These amazing dogs help deaf children and adults to leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life.
Dogs are known for their loyalty and love, and these valuable traits are seen in hearing dogs every day.

We are incredibly grateful to The J S & E C Rymer Charitable Trust for their support of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, specifically helping to fund hearing dog partnerships in East Yorkshire. Their donations help us to support deaf people to rebuild connection, companionship and confidence through our trained hearing dogs.
Thanks to the Trust’s generosity, people in East Yorkshire will benefit from the companionship and practical assistance that a trained hearing dog provides—alerting to important, life-saving sounds. We truly value their support and commitment to making a meaningful difference in East Yorkshire.
With sincere thanks,
