Growing more than crops

Enhancing habitats, and delivering bio-diversity net gain

As part of our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, JSR Farms is now designating areas of its conservation land to support Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This approach ensures that any land under development leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state than before the development.

By carefully managing and enhancing selected habitats across the farm – including woodland, grassland, and wetland areas, we are helping to deliver meaningful gains for biodiversity.

To enquire about purchasing any of JSR's BNG units please email us to arrange a meeting.

What is BNG?

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a policy led initiative to ensure developers of land offset or replace any biodiversity lost during development, and has been a legal requirement since 2024.

Building developers can do this either onsite by designating areas of biodiversity within the development or by purchasing off-site BNG units available from landowners, like JSR, who have registered land for biodiversity improvement as part of the the BNG scheme.

BNG credits at JSR

JSR Farms have successfully incorporated the BNG concept into our existing areas of biodiversity. Areas which had previously been voluntary projects.

43 hectares at our Chalk Stream Sanctuary has been registered as a biodiversity net gain site and can be found on the government biodiversity gain sites register.

This land has been entered into a 30 year agreement to create habitats and enhance the area's biodiversity.

How JSR are improving biodiversity

JSR's BNG area is nestled within the boundary of Eastburn and Southburn chalk streams and becoming an increasingly diverse area for wildlife. The diversity of the area means we are able to offer a variety of unit types to developers.

The team at JSR are continually improving the area by creating habitats and enhancing existing habitats through just some of the following initiatives:

  • Improving grassland to become species rich
  • Enhancing existing native woodlands
  • Planting new multi-species indigenous woodland areas
  • Creating pond scrapes for wading birds
  • Enriching wildflower meadows
  • Introducing grazing to naturally enhance areas of neutral grassland

Creating and improving diverse habitats

At JSR Farms our commitment to conservation is realised through our habitat management and monitoring plans. Guided by BNG principles, we aim to create a rich mosaic of habitats that support a wide range of wildlife and rare plant species. From deer and cuckoos to lapwings and wildflowers like Pepper Saxifrage, Greater Burnet, Southern Marsh Orchid, and Eyebright, our efforts are helping biodiversity thrive.

Over the past six months we have focussed on removing non-native species from existing woodlands, and planted replacement trees within our 6,000 tree woodland which was planted in 2022. We have recently added additional pond scrapes to provide a habitat and food for wading birds, and have introduced cows from our Stabiliser herd. Grazing animals create gaps in the grassland preventing one species from dominating the area and therefore allowing wildflowers to thrive.
