JSR Academy pig industry training scheme off to a good start

JSR Academy training with Farmvet and SRUC

JSR Academy is off to a good start

Students that were selected onto the JSR Academy this September have got off to a good start, with trainees showing lots of interest and a keenness to learn.

The JSR Academy was set up to inspire, train and educate people in pig production to the highest UK standards.

All the students in this year’s intake have settled in well following their induction week and a couple of days on some of JSR’s commercial farms. They also received a talk from Alex Haigh, JSR’s Technical Manager introducing them to JSR Genetics’ pig genetics programme.

Last week they had a visit from Nicola Bowers, Veterinary Technician at Farmvet, and Emma Baxter, professor in animal behaviour and welfare at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC).  Together they delivered a stockmanship talk, covering the Five Freedoms of animal welfare and some basic stockmanship and pig behaviour signals.

All the students were very engaged in the talks and found it extremely valuable. In the coming weeks they will learn more about pig genetics, selecting gilts and gilt acclimatisation.

If you are interested in joining the JSR Academy in 2025 then please get in touch with Genna Kerry genna.kerry@jsr.co.uk or you can read more about the training scheme on our website.
