The fundraising target was given to the Advanced Leadership Development Group (ALDG), which is a course designed for managers and senior managers run in partnership with training provider, Cedar Associates. The group were assigned a community support project in November last year and the second task given to the team was to organize a one off fundraising event. The group decided to involve the whole village and agreed on the idea of the Kirkburn Family Day, which was held at the village hall on Saturday, 29th June.
Attractions on the day included face painting, a fire eater, craft stalls, café and hog roast as well as the traditional bouncy caste, tombola, raffle and Punch n’ Judy show. Musical entertainment was provided by the Swinton and District Brass Band, which contributed to the traditional village fete atmosphere.
Local company, Clifton Timber, kindly donated materials to replace benches and a picnic table sited in the village field, and over £1100 in sponsorship was secured before the event.
ALDG delegate Bev Gibson, said:
“With events like this, the weather is pretty crucial. British summers being what they are, we knew that we could only cross our fingers and hope for a sunny day. We worked really hard to secure sponsorship from local businesses and were absolutely overwhelmed by the support we received and would like to say a huge thank you to all the businesses that contributed.”
As it turned out, the weather was superb and the local community turned out in force to support the day. The event raised a grand total of £1,804, well in excess of the target.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the result and it has been truly reassuring to see the local community and businesses pulling together to safeguard the future of Kirkburn’s village hall, which is such an important part of village life.”
John Armitage, Chairman of the village hall committee added “I would like to say a huge thank you to those companies and individuals who helped make the Family Day such a success. It has been a pleasure working with the team from JSR and as a result of their efforts and advice, we are well on our way to raising enough funds to have the village hall fully redecorated.”
